An eighth grader from the International School of Brooklyn recently made a generous donation to HFH Summer Camps. As part of a school project focused on community impact, Sam Torres decided to use his artistic talents to raise funds for a local organization addressing homelessness in NYC.
After connecting with HFH’s Partnerships Manager, Tierra Gunther, they agreed that directing Sam’s donation to HFH’s sleepaway camp, Camp Wakonda—starting its 2024 season on July 2nd—would have the greatest impact. Sam’s donation will help purchase supplies to support a variety of camp activities, including theater, dance, nature exploration, swimming, and art.
“The activities that we provide at camp spark creativity and learning and give the kids exposure to special interests and hobbies,” said Tierra. “It’s nice for them to just be a kid—be in nature, go swimming, and meet new people—experiences that they might not get outside of camp.”
“When they go back to school, they’ll have stories to relate to their peers because I’m sure a lot of their classmates are going to summer camp as well. It’s something that they can have as a memory,” Tierra added.
